COMENIUS UNIVERSITY

Comenius University in Bratislava (CU), founded in 1919, is the oldest and largest university in the Slovak Republic. It follows the university tradition of Academia Istropolitana established in Bratislava in 1465 by the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus. The University is named after an outstanding personality of the world history – John Amos Comenius, the father of modern education.

CU is a renowned university for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in both Slovak and English, particularly in the field of medicine.

As a higher education institution which aspires to be a member of leading European centres of academic excellence and as an internationally oriented university it sustains and develops its identity as a research and teaching institution of the highest international quality. Therefore, CU pays special attention to the steady evaluation of its research and teaching and participates in a number of significant international programs including TEMPUS, CEEPUS and the Framework Program of the European Union.

CU is a public university of a classic humanitarian type. It has 13 faculties where about 30,000 students, including more than 1,000 students coming from more than 40 different countries, are trained. Approximately 20,000 students are enrolled in full-time study.

JESSENIUS FACULTY OF MEDICINE

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine (JFMED CU) is the only Faculty of CU located outside Bratislava in the City of Martin. The beginnings of graduate training of medical students in Martin date as far back as 1962. In 1969 the Faculty of Medicine with the seat in Martin was officially established as the 8th faculty and the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University.

In 1991 the Faculty was renamed to the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in honour of an outstanding medieval physician and humanist Jan Jessenius, the Rector of Charles University in Prague, whose ancestors had their roots in Martin. In 1991 the Faculty, as the first Faculty of Medicine in Slovakia, opened enrolment to international students. General Medicine education for these students is provided in English.

Over the last 40 years there were up to 7,000 graduates from Slovakia and 250 graduates from 30 countries of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Americas. At present there are 800 students of General Medicine programme, out of which 350 are international students from 19 countries, mainly from Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the USA.

JFMED CU belongs to medical faculties with a lower number of students. Moreover, the ratio of students to full-time teaching staff is low (presently 801 / 175). With exception of lectures, all educational activities (practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, etc.) are carried out in small study groups – no more than 8 students per teacher. This provides conditions for individual approach     to students with the aim to achieve high standard of their knowledge and skills.

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN MARTIN

Clinical training of students is carried out at University Hospital in Martin (UHM). Its clinics are designated as teaching centres for medical students. The Hospital was founded in 1889 and belongs to the oldest hospitals in Slovakia. It has 895 beds, 42 clinical workplaces and departments and annually more than 26,000 patients are hospitalized there. UHM is a holder of certificate of quality management system ISO 9001:2001 according to the International Organization for Standardization.

GENERAL MEDICINE STUDY PROGRAMME

JFMED CU offers doctor study program of General Medicine (joint grade I + II university studies) for Slovak students in Slovak language as well as for international students in English language. The curricula of programs conducted in both languages are fully identical.

The program has a duration of 6 years (12 semesters) and includes 5.795 hours of theoretical education and practical training. It fully complies with the European Commission (EC) Directive 93/16/EC. During whole study a credit system based on the generally accepted European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)  is used.

 

Each academic year starts in September and is divided into winter and summer semesters. Semester lasts 15 weeks and is followed by a regular examination period. First two years cover theoretical preparation of students. In third, fourth and fifth years the students attend clinical courses and rotate through different clinics and departments of the University Hospital. The entire sixth year is devoted to internships at Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Gynecology and Obstetrics clinics, preparing the students for their final state examinations.

At conclusion of the programme the successful completion of the state examinations and defence of diploma theses are conditions for awarding the degree “Doctor of General Medicine” - MUDr. (Medicinae universae doctor – full equivalent to M.D.) by the Rector of CU.

 

GENERAL MEDICINE STUDY PROGRAMME

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine seeks students with appropriate academic qualification, a good command of English, and a strong motivation to study and practise medicine. Students who have completed secondary school education, have reached the age of 17 or more, possess an adequate knowledge in Biology, Chemistry and English, and are not Slovak citizens are eligible for the study at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine as self-payers.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

After JFMED CU reviews the application materials and decides that the applicant has met all the requirements and is qualified for the medical study program, he/she will be invited for an entrance examination in respective country. Applicants will be notified about the place and date of the entrance examination in time.

The examination is the form of multiple-choice tests in Biology and Chemistry in English language. Detailed syllabus of topics for the entrance exams as well as sample test questions can be send to the the applicant  after registration on www.interstudium.no

The payments cover the period from September 1st to August 31st. Each student is obliged to submit a receipt of full fee payment at registration/enrolment for the corresponding academic year at the latest.

POSTGRADUATE PhD. STUDY PROGRAMMES

Postgraduate PhD. Study (Grade III university study) is the highest form of university education in the Slovak Republic. Its aim within the faculties of medicine is to prepare PhD.students for research work in the fields of medicine and nursing through acquiring theoretical knowledge and mastering the methods of scientific work under the supervision of university teachers.

The „Philosophiae Doctor - PhD.“ degree is awarded to the graduates of PhD. study by the Scientific Board of the Faculty after a successful thesis defence.   The form of postgraduate study in the Slovak Republic is stipulated by the Higher Education Act No.131/2002.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

After completion of these requirements PhD. study applicants are invited for an admission interview. The admission interviews at our Faculty are usually held  in  August. The Dean of the Faculty makes the final decision on admission or      non-admission of the applicant upon the proposal made by the board of interviewers. SLOVAKIA AND MARTIN 

 

MARTIN

 

Martin is a city in northern Slovakia, situated on the Turiec river in a basin surrounded by the Lesser Fatra and Greater Fatra mountains, which offer excellent conditions for skiing in winter and for hiking in summer. Martin is        the centre of the Turiec region and the District of Martin.

The first recorded reference to Martin in written sources is dated to 1264. The settlement was granted the status of a royal town in 1340.  Martin became the foremost Slovak cultural center in the 19th century. Several cultural institutions (including the Slovak National Museum) were founded there. Most political activities leading to the Slovak national emancipation in the 19th and early 20th centuries were organized in or from Martin. The town was also industrialized at this time. Today, it is the seat of many important institutions such as the Slovak National Library. National Council of the Slovak Republic declared the City of Martin the center of national culture of the Slovaks on August 24, 1994.

 

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

ACCOMMODATION

Students of the Faculty can choose their accommodation either in a rented flat or at the Faculty’s student hostel.

Accommodation at the Student Hostel is in rooms with a toilet, shower, kitchenette and a refrigerator. Washing machines are at the disposal for all hostel residents. The rooms have also connection to the internet. The rent at the Hostel varies from approx. 100 to 266 EUR a month depending on type of the room and the room occupancy (single or double room).

Rented flat in the city centre costs approx. 300 – 1,000 EUR a month.

 

MEALS AND DRINKS

At the Hostel there is a student canteen and a small shop where you can buy simple meals. There are also small kitchens on each floor. Menus in restaurants offer a wide choice of European meals. International restaurants appear as well. You can also find pizzerias, buffets, cafes, or many places offering fast food.

LEASURE TIME

The geographical location of Martin provides excellent opportunities for sports activities. In each season it is possible to go walking, hiking, or cycling.  In close vicinity of Martin there are 3 well known ski centres with down-hill slopes of all skill levels.

In the city you can find several fitness centres and two indoor swimming pools. Horse riding is available in the area surrounding Martin. The Turiec river and its tributaries provide excellent possibilities for sport fishing.

There are many disco clubs in Martin, the Theatre and several cinemas. Museums and galleries in the city organise exhibits, concerts and other educational and artistic events on a regular or special occasion basis.

 

SHOPPING

It the city centre there are many shops and a department store. They are open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 12 am on Saturdays.

Five-minute drive or fifteen-minute walk from the city centre there is a shopping area with several shopping centres open every day from 9 am to 8 pm. TESCO Store is open non-stop 24 hours a day (except for Easter and Christmas).

VISA / RESIDENCE PERMIT

Students from EC countries do not need any visa to come and study in Slovakia. After arrival to Martin they will report at the Foreign Police Department and get Temporary Residence Permit for the purpose of study in Slovakia.
